【plants|Climate change is threatening the survival of Australia's alpine plants】A new study from the University of New South Wales in Australia has found that Australia's native alpine plants are struggling to adapt to climate change and could be under threat.
The researchers analysed changes in plant size, leaf thickness and leaf shape over the past 100 years in 21 plant species in the Koshicushko National Park in south-eastern New South Wales.
They found that only two plants showed significant changes in appearance in response to rising temperatures.
The researchers report that the plants all grow in an ecosystem that is less resilient to climate change.
The samples used in the study were partially from plant specimens preserved and collected between 1890 and 2016, and partially collected in 2017.
The researchers said most of the native alpine plants in the study were "unmoved" by higher than average temperatures in Australia's high mountains over the past century, reflecting their potential difficulty in adapting to large changes in the alpine environment and their survival prospects.
The researchers also plan to study alpine plants' response to prolonged heat waves this summer to predict the future effects of such weather on plants and the environment.
